The card manufacturing industry has developed over many years largely around the technologies required to print on PVC plastic and the high temperature platen lamination of card component sheets. New materials, electronic components, processes and equipment have all been introduced this century to add features, capabilities and durability to the venerable PVC transaction card. This presentation will provide a survey of some of these more prevalent developments that may affect how cards are manufactured and personalized in the near future.
Adam Ross, Sales Manager– eID solutions, cv cryptovision GmbH
Blockchain technology is currently promoted as the silver bullet for distributed applications of all kinds. Apart from cryptocurrencies, like from Bitcoin and many cryptoassets others, a blockchain can also be used as the framework for smart contracts and other means of attested transactions. This poses and important question for the smart card industry: what role will smart cards or other secure elements play a role in blockchains? At the moment, a user can use a self-issued smart card or other hardware device to store his private key as a sort of “cold” crypto-wallet, which results in better protection than software wallets or hosted cryptocurreny exchanges. But does it also make sense to use a state-issued eID card for a national cryptocurrency scheme? The answer is clearly yes, as long as we talk about electronic benefit remuneration. A direct crypto-settlement scheme certainly benefits from the fact that value is directly remit to the citizen, and the values are all immutably stored on the blockchain and can be transparently audited and verified by citizen and government alike. This session will introduce blockchains, cryptocurrencies, smart contracts and discuss the impact that hardware secure elements can have on these technologies.
